Press release

Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present our eigth exhibition with Joseph Stashkevetch, who presents monumental monochrome renderings that merge realism with meditative process. Known for his intensely detailed landscapes and still lifes, Stashkevetch (b. 1958) creates works characterized by soft shadows, strong contours, and narrow focal depth. His meticulous technique involves building layers of conté crayon and sanding them down repeatedly, resulting in images that evoke both accumulation and erosion. Drawing from autobiographical references and locations including Coney Island, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and San Francisco, his compositions explore themes of memory, decay, and transformation.
