Press release
The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present its seventh show with Doug and Mike Starn, Time Takes a Cigarette. Identical twins who work collaboratively, the Starns are internationally recognized for their mixed media works and transcendent photography. The Starns first received international attention at the 1987 Whitney Biennial, and their career has spanned more than three decades. They defy categorization as they combine traditionally separate disciplines, such as photography, sculpture, painting, and architecture. Their largest artistic endeavor, Big Bambú – the roof garden exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2010 – was the 9th most attended exhibition in the museum’s storied history.
The Time Takes a Cigarette exhibition will showcase new bodies of large-scale works, including one that captures expansive cloudscapes, curving gracefully and drawing the viewer towards our shared experience of earth’s ever-changing sky. The series is comprised of beautiful mixed media compositions of light, color and texture.
The Starns’ art has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide. They are represented in public and private collections including The Museum of Modern Art, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; The Jewish Museum, NY; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan; La Bibliotèque Nationale, Paris; La Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others.
