New Paintings

19 March – 18 April, 2021

Press release

Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present new paintings and drawings in our eighth show with acclaimed contemporary artist Donald Sultan. Known for his graphic forms, and precise use of color, Sultan’s paintings include a physical, authoritative element of a constructed, solid chassis that sits in contrast below the elegant surfaces of delicate blossoms, dimensional wormhole/grace notes, and dendritic fronds. Sultan’s expansively scaled, superflat, visually memetic compositions are both what you expect and what you don’t.

A native of North Carolina, Sultan holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After moving to New York in 1975, he quickly established himself as a prominent painter, printmaker and sculptor. Sultan’s works are included in many prestigious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Australian National Gallery, and the Walker Art Center.

The public is invited to an opening reception for the artist on Friday March 19, from 6 to 8 pm. Images are available upon request. Please call 970.920.9797 for further information.
