Press release

The Baldwin Gallery is proud to present its third show with the internationally acclaimed contemporary painter Eric Fischl. This new work depicts, with satisfied languor, long summer days in a golden, authentically American, world. Fischl’s figures lounge in the broad strokes of brilliant sun and saturated color, their comfort and satisfaction as palpable as if it were explicated by Cheever. The scale of the work itself is large but the vantage is low and intimate: the eye of an insider enjoying the view from the next blanket over. The layered oil washes on glossy Chromecoat paper delight in the body’s swell and curve and gesture; the restless sexuality of Fischl’s early painting seems to have settled into a desire closer to contentment.

Born in New York, Fischl studied art at the California Institute of the Arts. He may legitimately be considered one of the most important artists of his generation. Fischl’s work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Musee d’Art Contemporain, in Montreal; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Carnegie Institute, among many other museums both here and abroad. He is also quite substantially represented in public collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery. Eric Fischl currently resides in New York.

The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to announce its first show with Ryan McGinness, an American artist, born in 1971, who currently lives and works in New York City. Hailing from the surf and skate culture of Virginia Beach, McGinness arrived on the New York scene with raucous and refreshing graphic drawings that exhibited contemporary iconography. Copious colors and valiant forms overlap to create a combustion of representation and abstraction in a complex and chaotic composition. McGinness has forged the way in illustrative, elucidatory, multifaceted landscapes that force the viewer to contemplate the role of society in high art in rather unexpected ways.

An Andrew Carnegie scholar at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, McGinness interned at the Andy Warhol Museum. McGinness has been compared to Andy Warhol for his avant-garde interrogation of society and its reflections in his paintings, sculptures, and environments. He has shown internationally at museums and galleries.
