The Baldwin Gallery is proud to present its third show of new works by acclaimed contemporary artist Adam Fuss. The body of work titled “For Allegra” continues the underlying biographical disposition of his work. For Allegra is an elegy for a failed relationship and an artistic meditation on the loss of love. Fuss reflects on his emotions and builds up a series of images which may appear to be random but are metaphors for love that cannot be possessed. The overall effect is akin to a palimpsest of shared moments which coalesce to conjure up a haunting record of what is a universal experience.

Fuss continues his exploration of the relevance of early techniques of photography in today’s world. The exhibition contains new examples of Fuss’ mastery of the daguerreotype, an early Victorian form of photography in which the image is exposed directly onto a mirror-polished surface of silver.

Born in London in 1961, Adam Fuss is based in New York and has exhibited extensively throughout the world. His work is held in many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum, and other museums worldwide. He has been the subject of solo museum exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Fotomuseum in Winterthur and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Also showing at the Baldwin Gallery is the Britain-based artist Ewan Gibbs, who presents his first show in Aspen entitled “Colorado”. To create his delicate and highly schematic pencil drawings, Gibbs traveled to and around Colorado last year to photograph, but also to absorb the intricate, almost nostalgic, intimacy that softens the precision of his pixel-like mark-making. Gibbs’s work may seem to refer to the formal Victorian photographs and engravings that publicized the beauty of the American west, but their conceptual precision is almost mathematical, and as modern as programmer’s code.

Gibbs received his degree from Goldsmith’s College, London, and began showing immediately upon graduation. He now lives and works in Oxfordshire. Gibbs is included in the permanent collections of the Tate Modern, MoMA, and SFMoMA, and has had solo shows in New York, London, and Austin. He was the official artist for the Armory Show in New York in 2009, and has an upcoming solo show at SFMoMA in 2010.
