Peter Halley, New Paintings Isca Greenfield-Sanders, Light Leak   26 June – 26 July 2009 Opening reception Tuesday, 30 June, 6-8 pm The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present its third show of new paintings by acclaimed contemporary artist Peter Halley. Working consistently with Roll-a-Tex and unmixed Day-Glo paints on canvas, Halley further explores his “prison cell” motif in 8 new paintings. Halley references society’s sub-structures and framework through his “cells” and “prisons” to create his large, high-impact geometric paintings. As professor of art and director of graduate studies in painting and printmaking at Yale University, Halley plays an important role in academia in addition to his work as a practicing artist. His published critical writings have strongly influenced the discourse of contemporary art. Born in 1953, Peter Halley holds degrees from Yale University and the University of New Orleans. Halley’s paintings, featuring vibrant colors, contrasting textures and geometric shapes, are in numerous private and public collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the DaimlerChrysler Collection, the Tate Modern, the Broad Art Foundation, the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, the Stedlijk Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. Also showing at the Baldwin Gallery is New York artist Isca Greenfield-Sanders, who presents “Light Leak”, a new series of oil paintings and mixed-media that construct a dynamic dialogue between painting and photography. Collecting imagery from anonymous, discarded snapshots, the artist explores the notion of past-times and remembrance with a jovial and jubilant sentiment. Greenfield-Sanders’ palette is light-filled and consists of soft, pale blues, rich blues, and vivid greens. Greenfield-Sanders earned BA degrees in Visual Art and Mathematics from Brown University in 2000, and in 2001 she was a visiting artist at the American Academy of Rome. Solo shows of her paintings have been held in Turin, Munich, San Francisco, Aspen and Long Island City, and her work is in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum collection. Her art has appeared on the pages of numerous publications, including Art News, Tema Celeste, the New York Post, and the New York Arts Magazine. The public is invited to an opening reception for the artists on Tuesday, June 30th from 6 to 8 pm. Since 1994, the Baldwin Gallery has been presenting new work by established and emerging artists. It has earned an international reputation as an important venue for contemporary art, with a particular focus on American artists.  Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from Noon to 5 pm.
